New York, New York!

New York, New York!

The madness of Times Square

Before writing this post, I must admit to a bit of moonlighting first…… I’ve contributed a couple of guest posts on my trip to NYC, to the Guardian Cardiff site, which I was very pleased to be able to do.  So you can read about my trip here and here. But I wanted to share some images and thoughts about this amazing trip with the Cardiff Fashion followers too.

The City is amazing, it’s true, and I was certainly not disappointed with the sights, the smells, tastes, culture and people of this vast concrete jungle.  I was blown away by what was on offer at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) especially the Andy Warhol section.  You realise when you see his work in a city he is such a part of, how much he has influenced modern art, photography, style and culture.  I was particularly fascinated by the videos and the one of fashion and style icon Edie Sedgwick in particular.  Unfortunately you couldn’t take photos in this section but you could record some of his other iconic works, which I did……

I did take a pic of Carrie Bradshaw’s stoop, and I also reckon I saw SJP herself in another part of town, in coat and hat, but no-one believed me!  Apparently she lives around the corner from where Carrie ‘lives’.  I did see the Sartorialist however, on his way into NY Fashion Week.  But only managed to take a pic of his back, I would have loved to speak to him, but wasn’t fast enough!

As I expected, the shopping was amazing, with designer stores galore, along with high street staples such as Urban Outfitters, Gap and American Apparel of course.  If you buy something in the Times Square American Apparel, you can have your pic displayed on the massive digital billboard above the store, for 15 seconds of fame!

One of my favourite areas was Williamsburg, which reminded me of my teen years in Fremantle, Western Australia. Vintage stores, earnest street sellers and just a young and interesting vibe that seemed unhurried, unlike the rest of the city.

And what did I end up buying?  A Marc by Marc Jacobs bag (my personal weakness, bags!) a soft Spring cardie from Anthropologie.  Shoes from All Saints, and some jewellery from a couple of different and interesting stores.  I could have bought more, much more, but a big tax bill a month ago curbed my spending a little this time!  I guess I’ll have to go back soon!
